Updated April 18, 2017 with new links to driver files. Also works with Windows 10. I did the work on this so you hopefully won't have to. Several years ago my great-gift-giving wife surprised me with one of those gifts I didn't even know I wanted until she got it for me, the Behringer iAXE 393 electric guitar.

It's really a regular electric guitar, similar in style to a Gibson SG, but oh yeah. For a fraction of the price. So as you'd expect it has a pick-up where you can attach it to any standard guitar amp.

But this guitar also has a USB port and a headphone jack that lets you connect it to your PC, and it includes a license for software from Native Instruments that you can use to experiment with different presets on a higher end amplifier. So the concept is brilliantly simple: USB cable between the guitar and computer, headphones plugged into the guitar, amp software running, click on the preset you want, start playing.

No amp needed, no complaining neighbors or spouses, and no one gets to hear how bad you sound while you're working out the 3 or 4 licks you'll play over and over to make people think you actually know what you're doing and are really good. Of course, if you found this blog post, you probably already know all that.

You just want to know, now that you've moved on from Windows XP can you still use the iAXE? So, yes, you can. But there are 3 very important points you'll have to attend to. First, I had the serial number from when I originally registered the Guitar Combos software. You'll need that-and it doesn't appear that there's any way to register the software now, but I guess you could call Native Instruments. Let's assume though, that you have the serial number and the Guitar Combos CD.

Point 2 is that the driver install file on the CD that came with the iAXE won't work for later versions (I tried it on Vista and it wouldn't even work on that-much less Windows 7 or 8.) You can download a new version of the driver software from the Behringer web site. And point 3 is that there's a specific order that you'll want to do things in to make it all work. I did install and register Guitar Combo 2 first-and it was a bit of an ordeal, but only because I was trying to use the serial number I got for GC 2 to register GC 1. So if you remember which one you were using you can save yourself a lot of angst. The point is that Guitar Combos can be installed first and it doesn't seem to matter. And for the record, I was installing Guitar Combo 2 and the iAXE drivers on Windows 8 64 bit. If you're on 32 bit and an earlier version of Windows these steps should still work fine.

One other note about the serial number. It's a 25 digit number and you should enter dashes between each set of 5 numbers-at least, that worked for me. Once you've correctly entered the serial number, the 'Try' button will change to an 'Activate' button.

So, here's what you'll need to do. Go to the Behringer web site and get the new installer file. Now you'll want to download the USB Driver, either 32 bit or 64 bit depending on your system.

(Mac users, yours probably already works, but if not there is a list of MAC software for download.) So download. Once that's downloaded unzip it, but don't run the setup.exe file yet. Plug your iAXE into your PC using the USB cable. The Windows OS will install drivers for it. Once that's done (Windows will tell you that your device is ready to use, but that's wrong) unplug your guitar from the PC. Now run the setup.exe file that you downloaded from Behringer.

This is going to install the Asio driver for your iAXE. When the installer program tells you to, plug the iAXE back into the PC and when it finishes, go to step 4. Launch your Guitar Combo software and in the setup screen that pops up, make sure it is set to Asio, 44100, and Behringer USB Audio as shown in the picture. Click ok, and as long as your headphones are plugged in to the headphone jack on the guitar (not the audio out on the PC or the pickup jack on the guitar) you should hear music (or at least really loud noise) and you should be able to select from the Guitar Combos presets, use the built in recording device, etc. If you've lost your user manual from Behringer, you can probably find one online, but the link to the Behringer version is broken. Good luck and let's make some noise.

Sound: I bought this guitar for the usb connection to my computer. But found it to be such a great sounding guitar, I take it with me to play for the band, and play it every Sunday for the Church singers. Mine sounded so much like the Fender Telecaster That a lot of people thought it was one. I took a case knife from the kitchen and ran up and down the side of the neck to remove the sharp edges of the frets, the only thing I didn't like, But the knife smoothed them out until I don't feel them anymore. LPK Feature: I could not get the sound to come out to my earphones from the guitar, But I think that was something I was doing wrong. Ease of Use: I had been playing a Gibson Les Paul Studio model guitar.

About 30 years old and liked it. But this guitar is so much liter. And when you stand on your feet for two hours with a guitar around your neck, You appreciate the liter feel of this guitar, and the sound a sustain is just as good. Quality: Except for the sharp edges of the frets. Value: Best price I ever paid for a outstanding peace of equipment.

Manufacturer Support: Haven't had to have any so far, and I have had this guitar for almost a year now. The Wow Factor: I prefer the white one. To me it just looks more expensive. Just get the sharp edges off the frets and you have a perfect product.

Overall: Like I said I have had it for almost a year with no problems, and am thinking of ordering another one to put in the Church to leave all the time. For anyone that want's to play it. It will be there for them. Sound: Sounds nice. This is my first guitar, so I don't know what a high-standard guitar 'sounds' like.

Feature: The USB feature is awesome for those without an Amp, but became useless to me when I invested in a Mixer and DI box. Sounds great hooked up to the Line 6. Ease of Use: Plug and Play. Quality: Strings sound nice and holds up to the tuning factor. The only thing I don't like is the weak guitar strap that comes with it.

Value: Great guitar for a budget price. Manufacturer Support: Haven't used it, but Behringer is great with support. The Wow Factor: Saw it. Overall: With me being new to the guitar world, I'm glad I made the purchase.

Sound: There's nothing special at all as to how this guitar sounds. If you've heard one poorly-made electric guitar, you've heard 'em all. I was using this product with IK Multimedia's Amplitube Metal, and there was better sound post-processing than pre-processed. Feature: The only useful feature about this guitar is the fact that it interfaces with the computer via USB port. Should anything go wrong with the USB module (as did mine), it's completely HOSED. As it turned out, my USB module broke right in the middle of playing it! And this occured only two months after receiving it.

Now it can't be recognized by ANY system. Moreover, the drivers for Windows Vista, which were written after this device was released, are very poor. The drivers have to be reinstalled each time you unplug and re-plug the device from the computer, as any application that you use with it seems to forget that they're installed. Ease of Use: Figuring out the driver issue is not easy. The Behringer website takes you for a real roundabout when it comes to Windows Vista drivers for this device. The company does not do a good job when it comes to customer service.

As to the driver installation, the user needs to know the difference between regular USB drivers and ASIO drivers. Although the driver installation program will take care of all of that, the end-user may become a little confused when it comes to the inevitable device failures later on down the road. Quality: Behringer has a lot of wonderful, beautiful words to say about this guitar, but the truth is that this product does not live up to them. There are lots of tiny little inconsistencies in the build of this guitar that definitely give the detail-oriented person the idea that they've got sleepers on the assembly line.

Value: Even though this product costs closely around $100, points are deducted for the fact that it doesn't work right. It would be a crime to pay for something broken, and this product tests those limits. Manufacturer Support: There are lots of typographical errors in the manual for this product, not to mention spaghetti web page links that make you dizzy when trying to get to the right support pages on their website. I have never received any response from the customer support staff relating to this product.

I did read once that a guy reported that he was told that Behringer was waiting to see if Vista was 'the next big operating system'. But I can't say too much about that because that was his experience and not mine. I will however say that due to lack of response, I'm very unwilling to deal with this company again.

The Wow Factor: Ehh. No 'sex appeal' at all. The product is as plain-looking as they come. Overall: This product already broke on me, and that's after only two months! I don't know what I'm going to do about it except smash it into some concrete. Sound: This rating is based on playing the '393' thru the NI Guitar Combo lll virtual amp. The guitar seems to have pretty much the same tonal qualities as my Squier Black & Chrome Standard Strat, so I'm happy about that since I can blend it right in on other tracks of my recordings.

Feature: Behringers engineers did not play with a full deck of cards when they designed the USB connection for this puppy. In order for me to hear the guitar via external speakers, I not only have the USB cable plugged in between the computer & guitar, I also had to run a seperate stereo cable from the headphone jack, back into the line-in connector on the computer. This is Not Condusive to artistic freedom. Ease of Use: The '393' works well with the Combo lll amp. You'll have to experiment with the pre-sets though.

There's a lot of raw sound that will require considerable tweeking to tame it down. At least for my personal taste. Quality: 1st off, the neck was misalligned to the bridge. The E-1 string was just barely on the 22nd fret, while there was a good 5/16' on the E-6 side. The volume control is scratchy. They should have invested another $15 to upgrade the machine heads.

I don't think anyone would complain for the quality upgrade. The fretboard was so unsealed and grainy, it took three really well worked-in coats of 'Black Majic' wet shine liquid wax to seal and smooth out the board. Value: Like they say, you get what you pay for Manufacturer Support: One thing Behringer has, is a really great Technical & Manual support site. I don't think I've seen any better than theirs. As far as talking to a real person? I have'nt a clue.

The Wow Factor: As far as I'd use it (studio only) it will cover a lot of usage for me. This is definately not a live performance instrument in it's current configuration.

Overall: As I said, it will work well in my studio. Feature: The USB cord could be longer, it's about one meter long. But you can easily get an extension. Probably the next stage will be letting go of the cord whatsoever by using Bluetooth and battery power?

A traditional amplifier outlet provides great backward compatibility with antique devices such as amplifiers. You will not have to worry that the guitar will not work without a comp. The attached software is plainly bad. The installation guide is horrible, it did not install properly in a default mode on my mac powerbook.

It took me a week to find some time and call the customer support- who were actually quick in solving the problem. The software it can only output the sound back to the guitar's phones jack and can't export the sound directly to any other device such as speakers. However, a previous comment that it. Sound: This guitar sucks right out of the box. Have an up to date dell computer. Installed the software that came with the guitar.

Has a SERIOUS latency/sampling problem no matter what latency input/output or sampling rate i tried them all and then some. My sound card is good cause i use it for other recording stuff and never had a problem with anything other than Behringer. Feature: Its all good in theory the concept but i guess you get what you pay for. Ease of Use: Bought this for my son. I am electronic inclined and computer inclined but i cant see how someone with no knowledge or little computer knowledge to be very disappointed. Value: you get what you pay for Manufacturer Support: havent returned it back yet but will be. Sound: It sounds alright with headphones, but there is a lot of buzzing in the background when i use speakers.

Feature: The features are good, the usb option is very nice. Ease of Use: It is so easy to use, just put the CD into the computer and install the driver and you are ready to play.

Quality: It is pretty good but the edges of the frets were sharp, and the high E string broke on the first day, also I had some difficulty with the wammy bar, the threads stripped and it is hard to get in and out. Value: Great for the price. Manufacturer Support: Haven't used it. The Wow Factor: Looks nice, and the usb port is well hidden so it still has a good appearence. Overall: It is the first guitar I bought and I hope to still be using this guitar for 3-4 years. Sound: Sounds great to me. With included NI Guitar combos it sounds fantastic.

Feature: Wish it came with a separate electronic tuner. Ease of Use: Included NI Guitar Combos was fairly easy to use after getting it configured properly. When using it the sounds are fantastic.

Quality: Everything was perfect except the ends of the fret bars all had sharp edges. Value: Great for the price.

Not a Fender, but does the job for me (play for personal pleasure only). Manufacturer Support: Have not dealt with the Behringer directly. The Wow Factor: Looks and feels good. Easy to play. No vices found yet.

Similar in design and look to others on the market. Not a 'gotta have', but more a 'glad I have'. Overall: I am a beginner, but hope to progress quickly since I really love guitar better than any other instument.

This guitar should suffice for several years unless I get so good that I want to try going public with my playing. Sound: it sounds good for the price, so i'd say good value, but compared to the higher end, you can def.
