The locally made lifestyle/features/news program that aired weekdays on for two years, may be gone. But according to DJ Wilson, KGW president and general manager, elements of the show will live on - just in different places. 'We're strategically looking at how we can embed some 'Portland Today' legacy and vibe into other shows,' says Wilson.
Deciding to end production on 'Portland Today,' which aired its final show Friday, Aug. 31, wasn't easy.
'I have loved 'Portland Today,' says Wilson, who adds that she enjoyed seeing the various guests booked for the show gathered in the KGW building lobby prior to the taping. 'I don't want to lose that,' Wilson says, of how the show connected with the community, by bringing in guests to give cooking demonstrations, play music, talk about events, reflect what was going on in the Portland area, and more. 'It was just too difficult to sustain in this environment,' says Wilson. 'We thought that if we could re-allocate' some of the 'Portland Today' resources into KGW-produced broadcasts in the early morning and 4 p.m. Weekday afternoons, 'that would be of more value to a broader audience.' Beginning Monday, Sept. 17, the 2 p.m.
Weekday slot where 'Portland Today' formerly aired will now feature the syndicated program hosted by Dr. Mehmet Oz, which is starting Season 10. The season opener will include 'investigations into synthetic marijuana and the weed killer in your cereal,' plus, 'an exclusive interview with Roseanne Barr,' who has been in the news after ABC fired her from the 'Roseanne' revival.
Wilson says the original idea behind 'Portland Today' had to do with her goal to 'create as much real estate that is local as possible,' because 'that's what defines us. We're local, and provide information and entertainment.' So when the 11 a.m. Weekday time period opened up, where 'Portland Today' originally aired, Wilson says, 'we thought it would be great to do a local showcase on all things Portland, and we can be lighter with it, be more entertaining, and be more fluid.' The station 'had a lot of resources tied up in that show,' as Wilson says, and if you're looking at it as a business person, 'you have to look at what is the return on investment?' 'Portland Today' moved from its 11 a.m. Time period to 2 p.m.
With the arrival of a live, weekday syndicated show that's distributed by Sony Pictures television under an agreement with TEGNA, the parent company of KGW and many other stations around the country. 'Daily Blast Live' is described as an interactive TV and digital series, which covers news, culture, sports, entertainment and the day's hot topics. The show is currently available in a total of 50 markets. 'Our company is very invested in 'Daily Blast Live,' Wilson says, adding that the only West Coast window available to air it live was at 11 a.m. Moving 'Portland Today' to 2 p.m.
'had some effect on the audience,' Wilson says, noting that viewership dropped off after the move. By contrast, Wilson says, 'Daily Blast Live' 'is really catching on.' Putting on a daytime show with a pop culture format was something of an experiment, Wilson says, as was NBC using Megyn Kelly, who came from Fox News Channel, to host the morning show. Both shows are examples of trying something different in daytime, Wilson says. 'You really do have to give shows time to breathe,' she says, noting that Kelly has been 'lightening it up a bit' on her show.
'Daily Blast Live' is a different show this year, and we're seeing it attract more viewers. I would say both 'Daily Blast Live' and Megyn Kelly are unique approaches.' When it comes to knowing what will work in daytime TV, Wilson says, 'There's no silver bullet,' and notes that in a competitive media environment, it's worthwhile trying to come up with something beyond daytime staples such as game shows. But Wilson knows there are some programs daytime viewers still feel passionate about. 'Every time we pre-empt ' Wilson says, 'it melts down our switchboard.'

We made our push notification rich in style with a more prevalent location. We added support for HLS HTTP Live Streaming. What this means is more support for you to view live video! We also did some weather enhancements with multiple weather layers in the radar section.
